Character Designer, Disney's Elena of Avalor

David Cárdenas is a character designer on Disney's "Elena of Avalor," which follows Princess Elena, Disney's first princess inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.

Born in Mexico City, 25-year-old Cárdenas has brought a wealth of personal knowledge and culture to "Elena of Avalor" including incorporating Mayan glyphs into the designs and special effects, and creating logograms based on Mayan symbols that are displayed when the character Mateo, a wizard-in-training, is performing spells.

Cárdenas moved to the United States in 2009 to attend The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where he graduated with a BFA in Illustration in 2013. "Elena of Avalor" is his first foray into television animation.

In his spare time, Cárdenas enjoys trying to improve his artwork, playing video games, finding new places to eat with his girlfriend and playing with his three cats – Gatsby, Manny and Shadow.
