Catalina Aguilar Mastretta was born in Mexico City in 1984. She graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana with a Bachelor's degree in Communication Science and a minor in Audiovisual Media, with an additional year spent at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, studying Film and Television. During this time, she wrote and directed several short films, including "Somewhere Else" (Winner of Best Short Film at the Jewish New York Film Festival); "La Cuesta" (Winner of Best Script at the Alucine Film Festival); and "Tabacotla," which served as her undergraduate thesis film and was presented in festivals both in Mexico and abroad. In 2009, she attended the American Film Institute Conservatory, where she obtained an MFA in Screenwriting. She has since focused on writing, publishing essays and short stories in several publications. As a screenwriter, Catalina has worked on the serial historical dramatic show "Gritos de muerte y libertad", for which she wrote four episodes broadcast in Mexico and the US during the fall of 2010 and 2011; "Drawing Maple," which was awarded the prestigious Fadiman award at AFI; and “Echo Park.” In 2014, Catalina also wrote and directed “Las Horas Contigo,” which premiered to glowing praise at the Guadalajara Film Festival (, and was nominated for three Arieles (Mexican Academy Awards), including Best First Feature, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress (and winning for Supporting Actress). Most recently, Catalina wrote and directed EVERYBODY LOVE SOMEBODY, a half-English, half-Spanish romantic comedy funded in Mexico and set in both LA and Ensenada, Baja California starring Karla Souza (HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER). ELS was distributed in the US by Lionsgate in over 300 theaters and opened to rave reviews (93% on Rotten Tomatoes). Catalina was a participant in the inaugural Fox Director Fellows program: and the Sony Directing program. She will be participating in the Ryan Murphy HALF FOUNDATION directing program this coming summer.
